Approaches to Therapy & Counselling

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT):

ACT is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that helps individuals learn to respond more effectively to life's challenges. It teaches us to be mindful of our needs, respect ourselves, and take meaningful actions that are in line with what's meaningful for us.

This helps us manage difficult emotions like anxiety and depression by accepting them without judgment, and letting go so we can take better care of ourselves.

With ACT, we can learn to move through tough times with greater ease, reduce the impact of negative thoughts, and create a sense of joy and fulfillment in our lives.

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a supportive form of therapy that helps people work through tough emotions, thoughts and behaviours.

By challenging unhelpful thinking patterns, it can break the cycle of negative thoughts and emotions, leading to healthier feelings and actions. With research-backed strategies, individuals learn to take back control of their life and find balance within themselves. CBT gives people the tools they need to enact positive changes in their lives and improve well-being.

  • Person-Centered Therapy (PCT):

PCT is a therapeutic approach that puts the client at the center of their healing journey. This non-directive form of therapy trusts in each individual’s potential to find their own solutions and paths towards self-fulfillment. The therapist creates an environment full of warmth, empathy, and understanding, providing a safe and secure space for their clients to explore and express themselves free from judgement.

By valuing the client's perspective and helping them discover themselves, PCT encourages individuals to recognize their worth, make decisions confidently, and take steps towards personal growth and happiness.

  • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT):

DBT is an evidence-based form of psychotherapy that combines cognitive-behavioural techniques with mindfulness practices.

The therapy focuses on providing people with skills to regulate emotions, tolerate stress, interact better with others, and cultivate more mindful awareness.

By mastering these skills, individuals can gain a greater understanding of their emotions, build healthier relationships, and effectively respond to life’s challenges in a balanced way.

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing):

EMDR is a helpful and popular type of therapy that can help people work through difficult memories.

A therapist will guide you through special eye movements or other activities, like tapping or sound, to help lessen the power of these memories on your life.

This therapy has been especially successful in helping those with PTSD, traumas, anxiety, and depression. EMDR gives people the ability to work through traumatic experiences and come out feeling stronger and more in control of their emotions. It's a safe and effective way to gain awareness and insight into our thoughts and feelings to bring about positive change.

In my practice, I don't subscribe to any singular form of therapy as the most effective. Instead, depending on the individual's needs, I use a range of tools and techniques in order to provide the best support possible.

As a registered clinical counsellor (RCC), I believe in tailoring therapy to meet the unique needs of each client. This means utilizing a variety of therapy approaches and modalities including acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).

By having multiple methods at my disposal, I am able to customize the therapeutic experience to ensure the greatest potential for growth and healing.

Whether it's helping clients explore their values and make meaningful changes, challenging negative thought patterns, or addressing past traumas, I am committed to using the most suitable approach for each individual. This flexibility and adaptability in therapy are key factors in creating a safe and supportive environment where clients can heal, grow, and thrive.
